Jönköping
county commissioned Anna Viola Hallberg as curator for a
four town art project looking at art outside institutions. The process
began in the spring of 2018 where Hallberg visited the towns and had sit-downs with cultural administrations and civil society. Since then
Hallberg developed the concept DISTANCIO and invited international
artists. DISTANCIO explores audience, the relation between public space and public sphere and embraces subaltern counterpublics towards social equality, cultural diversity, and participatory democracy.
Anna
Viola Hallbergs work - as an artist and curator - interacts with
specific communities, while addressing social or political
contingencies.
Hallbergs artistic practice is informed by the notion of in-betweenness,
as personal experience and geopolitical position. Her methodology in the
immersive space-narrations of video, sound, photography, and text brings
forward a discussion on the documentary of experience, remembrance, and
emotions rendering collective memory and the work for social justice.
The curatorial work spans from video-based exhibitions to initiatives
in public space and strategic and curatorial development of publicly
funded art for artists working with participatory, engaged, and critical
practices.
In addition to working with DISTANCIO she is currently rolling out the
concept ORGANISM where she together with her collaborate partner formed a
duo MONUMENT STUDIOS
working with looks at the artist as source community. Together they
address the lack of studio spaces. As closure of a five-year project
developing an art residency program for Skövde Art Museum for international artists working with Extended Social Art) Hallberg co-organizes and keynotes What Will Be? conference in Lisbon (Oct 21-22, 2019).
